Editorial Production Intern Plymouth , Michigan

Hayden-McNeil, part of Macmillan Learning Curriculum Solutions, publishes custom textbooks and laboratory manuals for universities and colleges throughout the country. Under the direction of the Custom Production Manager, the Editorial Production Interns will primarily work with a team of Production Editors to prepare complex manuscript materials for typesetting. They will have the opportunity to learn about the publishing process by working with various teams (Managing Editors, Designers, and Proofreaders) and by obtaining hands-on experience with many different projects. This is primarily a production position with a focus on file preparation (not editing or writing).

Applicants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program, or have graduated within the last 3 months. Must be available to work onsite in our Plymouth, MI office from mid-March through July. Must be able to work 15-20 hours/week in March and April, and then 40 hours/week in May, June, and July. Work hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30 am-5:00 pm.

Potential candidates will be given a short text preparation task to complete as part of the interview process.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Assist Production Editors with preparing new and complex revision manuscripts for typesetting or digital conversion. Tasks include (but are not limited to):
    • Reviewing layout files for hierarchy and style
    • Creating Word files from scanned hard copy, webpages, or PDFs
    • Compositing/styling Word files
    • Researching, organizing, and editing photos
  2. Print, organize, and deliver manuscripts to Managing Editors
  3. Proofread simple projects as assigned
  4. Prepare content for inclusion in Hayden-McNeil's digital content library by optimizing PDFs for web and writing metadata

Required Skills / Knowledge:

  • Strong familiarity with Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel
  • Superior English grammar, punctuation and spelling skills necessary
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to learn quickly
  • Efficient and accurate with repetitive tasks
  • Adept at problem-solving and communicating solutions with others
  • Able to prioritize work and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment

Helpful Experience:

  • Experience using track changes, macros, and styles in Microsoft Word
  • Some familiarity with the Adobe Creative Suite
  • Experience proofreading for grammar, punctuation, spelling, and consistency
  • An interest or background in educational publishing and learning technologies
