Position Summary
The
Pharmacy Intern-2nd Year is responsible for providing technical and customer
service support to the hospital pharmacist. He/she supports pharmacy services
by fulfilling drug orders, performing drug inventory maintenance procedures,
communicating effectively with customers and staff, and competently operating
departmental computer systems. The Pharmacy Intern-2nd Year also attends
pharmacy rounds as appropriate. He/she prepares and dispenses medication to
patients under pharmacist supervision, with a focus on ensuring patient safety,
comfort, and privacy.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
of the Job
- Fills
drug orders (including prescriptions, unit dose cassettes and chart orders for
inpatients) accurately and efficiently, organizing his/her work to allow the pharmacist
to productively check each order. The Pharmacy Intern maintains awareness of
the workflow needs of others and adjusts his/her activities to provide optimum
service. - Communicates
with customers, physicians and nurses courteously and promptly and willingly
accepts direction from pharmacists. He/she utilizes the information received
from customers, physicians, nurses and coworkers to triage service requests in
a manner which optimizes workflow and benefits customers. - Interprets
complex written chart orders and prescriptions and processes them in the
computer accurately and efficiently to meet the customer service demands of the
pharmacy. - Possesses
thorough knowledge regarding prescription pricing and relevant third-party
prescription benefit plans. Competently answers all billing questions and
confirms with appropriate staff that accurate information is conveyed. - Orders
and restocks inventory to maximize inventory turnover and minimize expired
drugs. The Pharmacy Intern checks for expired drug products and other defects
and removes them from stock. He/she reviews and processes products ordered for
specific patients in a timely manner.
Work Experience
- Must
be able to type 30 words per minute. - Excellent
computer skills in a MS Windows environment including Word, Excel, and
PowerPoint are required.
Education/Licensure/Certification
- Must
be currently enrolled as a second-year student in an accredited Pharmacy
school. - Valid
California Pharmacy Intern license is required.
