Summary

Performs the functions of law enforcement necessary to maintain community interaction, public peace, protect life and property, prevent crime, apprehend violators of the law and otherwise assure proper enforcement of the laws and ordinances of the City of Kirkland and the State of Washington. Contribute to the apprehension of criminal suspects by conducting preliminary and follow-up investigations. This would involve contacting and interviewing witnesses and victims of a crime; sketching, photographing a crime scene; dusting for latent fingerprints; and collecting other evidence and preserving the chain of evidence. The position prepares criminal investigation reports and testifies in court.

Hours of Work

Must be available to work 8 or 10 hour rotating shifts.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be 21 years of age, a US citizen or a lawful permanent resident, have a valid Washington State Drivers' License at the time of hiring and ability to remain insurable under the City's insurance plan. Must not have any felony convictions as an adult and have vision correctable to 20/20 in each eye. Must possess the ability to read, write and speak fluent English. Must have the physical capability to successfully meet the Criminal Justice Training Commission Fitness Ability Test Battery.

Working Conditions & Physical Activities

The working environment is characterized by the potential for physical, verbal and psychological assault by prisoners or individuals suspected of crime. Dependant on assignment and task, the work period may be eight to twelve hours a day. Other physical activities include, but are not limited to, operating a patrol vehicle, walking, running, or sitting at a work station performing administrative tasks. The scope of work performed has the potential for other physical or cardiovascular exertion in the performance of duties. Work is performed in a variety of weather conditions and adverse conditions. Assignments may include but are not limited to Patrol, Investigations, Crime Prevention, Training Unit, Special Response Team, Crisis Negotiations Team, Neighborhood Resource Officer, Pro-Act Unit, School Resource Officer, Traffic Unit, Bicycle Patrol, and K-9. Specialty units and cadres may be applied for 12 months after being released from probation status.

Preferred Qualifications

Certification from State of Washington Basic Law Enforcement Academy within the last 6 months is preferred, although not a requirement.

Selection Process

The Kirkland Police Department uses Public Safety Testing (PST) to process applications and conduct the written and physical ability exams for this position. To apply for this position, go to and complete the application process. PST has the ability to administer the written exam to applicants in most states. The physical ability exam is a pass/fail test. Guidelines for this test can be found on the PST website.

Based upon PST's written exam score, applicants are numerically ranked and may be invited to interview with the City of Kirkland Police Department. Interviews are also dependent on the current staffing needs of the agency.

If invited to interview, a weighted final score for the eligibility list will be based on PST's written exam (40%), and the interview score from Kirkland PD (60%). A final weighted score of 70% or above is considered a passing score to be placed on the Entry Level Police Officer eligibility list for a period of 12 months.

Applicants claiming veteran's preference must bring a copy of their DD-214 to their interview and will be required to complete a "Veteran's Scoring Criteria Status in Examinations" form in order to receive consideration for veteran's preference points.

Successful completion of a background investigation is a condition of employment.
